If your workload includes SAP GUI, Citrix, Oracle NCA, or terminal emulation, this is often the only tool that can drive it realistically, and the Analysis module still produces deeper correlation reports than any open-source alternative. The price, Windows-centric tooling, and C-based scripting are the trade-offs, and modern web APIs are better served by cheaper code-first tools.

LoadRunner is the tool I built the early part of my career on, and it remains the reference for enterprise protocol testing. The suite has three parts: VuGen for recording and scripting, Controller for designing and running scenarios across load generators, and Analysis for post-run reporting. Today it is sold by OpenText and sits alongside LoadRunner Enterprise, LoadRunner Cloud, and the developer-oriented LoadRunner Developer.
The question with LoadRunner is never whether it can do the job. It is whether your workload justifies the price and the process that comes with it.
What you get
The protocol list is the widest in the market: web, TruClient for browser-level scripting, SAP GUI, Citrix, Oracle NCA, RDP, terminal emulation, .NET, Java, and more. If your business runs on a packaged application with a thick client, LoadRunner is often the only tool that can drive it realistically. Correlation studio, parameterization, and runtime settings are mature, and once you know them you move fast.
The Analysis module is still the benchmark for cross-correlating response times, throughput, and server monitors on one graph. Controller scenarios scale to very large virtual user counts across load generators, and there is a long history of enterprise support behind it.
Where it falls short
Cost is the obvious one: quote based, per virtual user, and expensive for sustained concurrency. The tooling is Windows centric, and C is still the default scripting language for most protocols, which feels dated next to JavaScript or Python tools. DevWeb brings JavaScript and a code-first workflow, but the overall experience remains GUI first, and Jenkins or Azure DevOps plugins wrap that rather than replace it. For a modern HTTP or gRPC API, cheaper code-first tools will get you there faster.
AI features
OpenText is rolling out its Aviator assistant across the LoadRunner family for script generation and result analysis. I rate this as Adequate rather than Strong because it is still arriving and depends on your licensing tier. Watch the release notes.
Bottom line: pick LoadRunner Professional when SAP, Citrix, Oracle Forms, or mainframe traffic is part of your load model and procurement expects vendor support. For web APIs owned by developers, spend the budget elsewhere.
